Redoing a tin roof.

Measure 3 8 inch 1 cm downward from the chalk. Today metal roofs often consist of an alloy steel with a zinc coating applied to it for protection known as galvanized metal. Place the drip edge horizontally against the edge of the roof to mark a distance. Occasionally rust will eat right through your tin roof leaving minor cracks or holes.

Ironically tin roofs are not made out of tin. Sand the entire metal roof surface very lightly with your wire brush or sandpaper. Set the drip edge aside. Use chalk along the inner upper edge of the drip edge to mark where the drip edge lays on the felt.

Large rusted out areas require a replacement sheet of metal but for smaller problem areas you can do a. A current alternative trend in roofs is the use of aluminum. To shed water away from the eave most roofers add a metal drip edge right to the roof deck covering it with the membrane. It should reach 3 feet beyond the inside of the wall and cover any valleys to prevent ice dams and wind driven rain from reaching the sheathing.
