Repairing Screen Door Hinge

Drop the screws into the hinge holes and tighten the ones that still have some wood to bite into.

Inspect the door hinge and look for where it is loose or hangs off of the door or doorjamb. The screw holes where the hinge or hinges are loose need to be repaired. Replacing screen door hinges will only take a few minutes per hinge as long as you have the right ones. Unlike wooden doors steel doors require a different approach to repair hinge screws that are pulled out of the door.

Open the door wide and insert a wedge under the bottom outside corner to level it. Replacing screen door hinges. For an aluminum screen use a spline roller to press the spline and screen into the grooves. If the door has a large hinge with four screw holes just drive 3 in.

If the screws just stripped and pulled out cleanly you could fill the hole with toothpicks and wood glue then reinstall the screws. Apply and secure screen to spline. Screw through the middle hole and redrill the top screw hole at a slight angle so the screw hits solid wood. It doesn t take much of a blow to break hinge screws out of a particleboard door.

If the hinge and jamb are painted cut the paint around the leaf with a utility knife swing the leaf away from the jamb. Screws straight through the two holes toward the center of the door. A screwdriver or a battery drill is all you need to replace most hinges. With the door closed slip an adjustable wrench over the door leaf only not the jamb leaf and bend.

A traditional screen door will have surface mounted hinges. Remove the screws that hold the loose hinge leaf to the door jamb. Fix it the right way not the wrong way. After time the weight of the door will pull on the hinge and cause the door not to hang straight. However if the hinge has only three holes add a 3 in. When the door is swung open the loose screws pull out of the threaded mounting holes. If you have a centering hinge drill use the hinge as a template and the finish repair will be better than new and last for years.

Another hint is to use a long screw in one of the holes in the top most hinge long enough to penetrate the stud. For a wooden screen you will nail the screen into place with wire brads. The wrong way is a temporary fix not cool. Through use the screws securing the hinge become loose.
