Repair Holes In Tin Roof

The first step in the repair of any metal roofing material will involve cleaning the surface.

You want the patch to extend past the hole at least 2 inches on each side. Apply a coat of acrylic coating to the area around the hole or holes with a paintbrush. Repairing nail holes in a metal roof is an inexpensive alternative to replacing portions of the roof. Inspect the roof thoroughly to find all holes that require repair.

Use a wire brush to scrape away rusted areas on your roof. Strive to clear away as much of the rust as you can. For rust that proves difficult to clear apply some mineral oil onto the rusted areas with paper towels. Sometimes it is better to repair a metal roof than to replace it.

Next cut a patch from a sheet of metal roof panel slightly larger than the size of the hole that needs to be patched. Some holes may have developed in rusted spots and it is best to repair a clean surface. You can scratch around the hole with steel wool as abrading it will help it take the adhesive better.
